Underground Water, an Important Natural Resource

Published by celtchic at 7:00 am under Cave Science, Uncategorized Edit This

The chemicals and products we dispose of have a large impact on the quality and nature of our underground water.  It is often misunderstood how the water stored underground is affected by the common products and chemicals we use on our lawns and in our gardens, and the garbage we carelessly generate.

The trash we dispose of, sometimes thoughtlessly, can have detrimental effects as products break down leaving residues of harmful chemicals.  Many times a safe substance breaks down into a more dangerous compound.  By carefully understanding the processes occurring naturally underground, where the majority of our freshwater is stored, we can see the impact these harmful chemicals have on the microbial processes underground.

So, what can you do to protect something you can’t see?  For your part, make sure to dispose of any harmful products or chemicals and garbage in the correct fashion.  Follow local waste disposal laws and avoid the use of pesticides on the lawn.  Fertilizers may also cause imbalances in the microbial communities underground, changing natural processes and affecting the quality of our underground water, an important natural resource.
